Jerel Worthy is a borderline first-round prospect after an average 2011 season, but he's had a solid offseason.
I’ve confirmed that 31 NFL teams attended Michigan State’s Pro Day on Wednesday, March 14th. The Kansas City Chiefs were the only team not in East Lansing.
The top prospect for the Spartans in this year’s draft is not quarterback Kirk Cousins, but 6-foot-2, 308-pound defensive tackle Jerel Worthy. Worthy had an average workout at the Scouting Combine last month and was timed a 5.08 in the 40, and generated a 28.5 inch vertical.
At yesterday’s Pro Day, Worthy looked smooth in drills and participated in the bench press, which he didn’t at the Combine due to a wrist injury, posting 28 reps. Worthy is a fringe first-round prospect. He could sneak into the later portion of the opening frame, but a safe projection would be as a high second-round selection.
While Worthy is the Spartan to be drafted the highest, Cousins has gained momentum over the last month or so. At 6-3, 214, Cousins, although not a great athlete, has the size, intelligence and enough arm strength that will intrigue teams that are looking for a young quarterback to develop. It’s possible he could go as high as the middle of the second-round.
Cousins stood on his numbers from the Combine at the Pro Day, but participated in position drills and threw to familiar targets.
Other Michigan State prospects that will likely hear their name called on draft day are: free safety Trenton Robinson (4th – 5th Round), tight end Brian Linthicum (5th Round), running back Edwin Baker (5th – 6th Round) and wide receivers B.J. Cunningham (6th – 7th Round) and Keshawn Martin (7th Round – PFA).
